Ongoing Research

The interface between wheel and rail is important in studying the dynamic behaviour of a rail vehicle. In a transient simulation, the evaluation of the contact forces is performed at each time step. Thus, fast numeric algorithms are required. On the other hand, to be able to predict surface deterioration phenomena such as wear or rolling contact fatigue in this interface one needs to know the contact patch and the stress distributions precisely.  Therefore, it all boils down to a trade-off between time efficiency and accuracy in contact modelling.

Due to the complex nature of contact mechanics, one should either make several simplifications or use an advanced numerical method such as FEM. The latter is yet too slow to use on-line with vehicle dynamic simulation. Meanwhile, the currently used methods are based on several assumptions which may be violated in special occasions.

The aim of  ​my research project  is to find a model for the wheel–rail contact applied to dynamic simulation of the rail vehicle – a precise and numerically efficient model in response to modern requirements.
