Routing

Increasing fuel costs and the strive to reduce the environmental impact of shipping creates a need for the development of sophisticated techniques for route optimization. In such methods weather forecasts are utilized to determine the ship route across the seas that results in minimal fuel consumption. The largest source of error in such methods originate from the weather forecasts, whose reliability is low for long lead times. Research in this field at KTH Naval Architecture involves development of methodologies to utilize so-called ensemble forecasts, instead of deterministic forecasts, in order to increase the reliability and accuracy of route optimization methods. The research is a part of GSS-initiative (Green and Safe Transport in Commerical Shipping), is carried out in cooperation with the company Seaware and involves one PhD-project.
