Overall Goals

The overall objective of the project is to increase the knowledge on how to develop vehicle suspension systems, under maintained handling and riding comfort, with reduced unsprung mass, rolling resistance, tyre wear, structure-borne noise, vibrations, suspension travel and/or tyre size. The focus is on changes in the suspension systems in order to address both the ECO² criteria, the conflict between different vehicle characteristics and the need of multi-objective optimization.

Functional Conflicts involved

1/ Efficient circular-to-linear motion conversion – Light-weight movement – Unsteady motion handling

The unsprung mass of a land vehicle must balance efficient conversion of the wheel’s rotation into linear motion against light-weight low-energy vehicle movement, and against stable and smooth handling of cornering and varying surfaces.

2/ Light-Weight Movement – Vibration Damping – Load Carrying

Vehicles must balance light-weight low-energy movement against high vibration damping, and against high load carrying.
