Acoustic metamaterial: An ultra-thin damper for multi-low-frequency noise

Started: 2018 (completed)

This project explores a new ultra-thin acoustic structure for damping multi-low-frequency noise, typically the type of noise from engines,compressor/fan in HVAC system, or even the vibration of vehicle panels. The solution of this challenge requires a reduction of the geometric dimensions of such a structure while increasing the density of states at low frequencies. Recently the so-called sub-wavelength meta-materials based on the concept of slow sound propagation have been studied. A new type of acoustic structure has been developed at Creo Dynamics: the combination of such a concept with traditional Helmholtz resonators.
