Lightweight Design in Submarines

The research project Lightweight Design in Submarines is focusing on the introduction of composites and lightweight systems in submarines. Traditional submarines are an all steel design where configuration and dimensioning is to a large degree based on experience and good practice. With new and more lightweight structures the surrounding fluid has a larger impact on the dynamic behaviour of the components and the traditional design methods must be evaluated, extended and complemented. This to ensure a safe and high performing structure where the properties of the lightweight design is utilised without sacrificing strength or signatures. For example the casing and fin of a submarine, can be designed using composites to save weight and improve the stability of the vessel. Simultaneously the lightweight design must fulfil stress and stiffness requirements without sacrificing active or passive acoustic signatures.
