Nonlinear Dynamics of Parts in Engineering Systems

Products often contain parts with nonlinear characteristics that can cause complex dynamic behaviour such as subharmonic and chaotic responses as well as coexisting solutions. The nonlinearities can be for example impacts, friction, electromagnetic forces, nonlinear stiffness and damping. In order to develop good and reliable products it is important to be able to predict the behaviour.

The main goal with this project is to increase the knowledge of modelling and simulation of the nonlinear dynamics of parts in engineering systems. Especially, systems with a combination of different types of nonlinearities, coupled systems, and models of different detail will be studied. This also includes techniques for analysis and methods to interpret the results for these types of systems. Another goal is to study how chaotic vibrations in one part of a system affect the total system behaviour.
